After a positive evaluation of the use of Epilog PreOp during several months, the world-known national epilepsy center of the Kuopio University Hospital (Finland) decided to engage with Epilog to implement EEG source imaging technology in their presurgical work-up of refractory epilepsy patients.
As a specialized epilepsy center, Kuopio provides an epilepsy surgery program to patients with medically refractory epilepsy, aiming to surgically remove the region in the brain that is causing the epilepsy. In 2020, a pilot collaboration was started with Epilog to use Epilog PreOp, a web-based service for electrical source imaging (ESI), to gain access to this technique as an extra tool for localizing the epileptogenic zone. With the current agreement, Epilog PreOp will be included in the presurgical evaluation of refractory epilepsy patients.
“For us it is important to develop further our activities and with Epilog we were able to start the collaboration even during this challenging period of COVID-19.” says Prof Reetta Kälviaïnen of Kuopio University Hospital. “Electrical source imaging can provide valuable insights in the preoperative evaluation for refractory epilepsy. However, such advanced EEG analysis is a time-consuming and labour-intensive process. Epilog ESI offers an efficient and clinically validated alternative for us to work with.”
There is also great enthusiasm from Epilog’s side. Gregor Strobbe, CEO of Epilog: “Kuopio and his director of the Epilepsy center Prof. Kälviäinen are world-known for their expertise in epilepsy management. We are proud to have Prof. Kälviäinen on board as one of the leading voices in the epilepsy community.”
